Rottingdean Windmill Walk 15 miles
13 July 2003

My very first challenge walk, done with my friends Anne and Helen from the RW forum.

Well, what a lovely day!
Arrived at Brighton station to be greeted by Anne and Helen, and we zoomed off along the coast to Rottingdean school.

Lots of marathoners starting, and we weren't due to start til 0930, but after registering and adjusting kit, we set off around 0900.

First part of the route took us down to the sea, with a lovely breeze that kept the edge off the heat.

Then we clambered inland. Lots of marshalls around and the whole route was brilliantly signposted.

First climb came soon, as we headed towards Kingston. The views were spectacular coming up to the crest off the downs overlooking Lewes. First waterstation had thoughtfully supplied home made windmill biscuits and cold cross buns. Very welcome as I hadn't had breakfast.

A very steep descent into Kingston, and we rested awhile at the 14K waterstation in the village hall, which sold yummy egg and cucumber sandwiches. Helen tucked in to a lemon curd cake.

As we'd decided not to race walk, we chatted most of the way round, keeping an eye out for Pix and Duck, but not seeing them.

Out of Kingston was a dense mass of contour lines and a very very steep climb, but amazing views from the top.

There was another water station soon after that, where an ancient but clearly strong ultra runner had a chat with Helen about the Trailwalker.

From this point on, it was a gentle climb and descent back to Rottingdean, and a mile from home, Anne streaked away to run to the finish. Helen and I strolled back to find Anne waiting for us with her medal proudly displayed.

We collected a lovely goody bag of medal/horse brass, certificate and badge, then collapsed with cans of Stella. Poor Anne had a nasty burst blister, so the compeeds came in useful.

All in all, a fantastic day - a brilliantly organised walk, excellent company and fine scenery.

Next year's walk will be run by the Red Cross - see here for more details.

Thanks, Helen and Anne, for a great time!
